The Maple Leaf & The Sword: Canadian Forces Europe

Canada was an unlikely contributor of military forces to West Germany during the Cold War, however it nonetheless provided forces for the percieved war against the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union. Initial Canadian forces to arrive in West Germany originated in 1951, when the 27 Canadian Infantry Brigade was deployed to Hanover, West Germany as a part of the British Army of the Rhine. These initial units would soon be relocated two years later in 1953, when they were garrisoned at Soest. From here, Canadian military forces would rotate Army units with the 27 being replaced by 1 Canadian Infantry Brigade Group in October 1953, followed by 2 Canadian Infantry Brigade Group in 1955 and 4 Canadian Infantry Brigade Group in 1957. Up until 1957 with the arrival of 4 Canadian Infantry Brigade Group, each brigade had only been equipped with a single squadron of main battle tanks, however 4 CIB was equipped with a full armored regiment equipped with Centurion tanks and an independent brigade reconnaissance squadron equipped with Ferret armored cars. As 1959, approached and it became time for 4 Canadian Infantry Brigade Group to rotate back to Canada, the policy was changed with 4 CIB and its associated brigades remaining in Germany instead of different units rotating in and out every two years. Under this policy, major combat elements under 4 CIB were rotated out of West Germany every three years.

The Brigade was headquartered in Soest with additional units positioned in Soest and other towns across North Rhine-Westphalia.

  • Soest - Brigade Headquarters complete with 1 Infantry battalion and service units
  • Hemer - 1 Infantry battalion and an artillery regiment
  • Werl - 1 Infantry battalion, an engineer regiment and a field ambulance unit
  • Iserlohn - 1 Armored regiment

In 1962, 4 Canadian Infantry Brigade Group was reinforced with a helicopter recce troop operating nine CH-112 Nomad helicopters. The CH-112 was Canada's variant of the American Hiller OH-23 Raven observation helicopter. Into the 1960s, the Brigade strength was around 6,700 men organized into three mechanized infantry battalions, a reconnaissance squadron, an artillery detachment and a logistical operations detachment. It was subsequently called a 'light division' by Canada's British counterparts. On 1 May 1968, 4 Canadian Infantry Brigade Group was redesignated as 4 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in response to Canada's armed forces being unified to become the single Canadian Forces. After a review of Canadian policy, the Canadian government reduced defense spending and reduced the force in Europe by half.

It was also decided that instead of being an attachment as an active part of the British Army of the Rhine, the 4 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group would be given a new role and status as a reserve unit attached to the American US VII Corps or II German Corps. With its new status and designation, the unit was relocated to the town of Lahr in southern West Germany where it stood up at Canadian Forces Base or CFB Lahr. Now in a reserve status, 4 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group's nuclear capability was thus withdrawn although, the unit would continue serving as a deterrent against Soviet aggression in Europe.

Canadian Infantry Brigade Group/Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group units included:

Armor
  • The Royal Canadian Dragoons - 1957-1959, 1970-1987
  • Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) - 1966-1970
  • 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise's) - 1960-1964, 1988-1993

  • 2nd Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery - 1964-1967
  • 3rd Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery - 1960-1964

Units assigned to CFB Lahr would include:

CFB Lahr
  • 4 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group Headquarters and Signal Squadron
  • one armoured regiment
  • 1970–1987 - The Royal Canadian Dragoons
  • 1987–1993 - 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise's)
  • 1st Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery
  • 4th Air Defence Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery
  • 4 Combat Engineer Regiment
  • 4 Service Battalion
  • 4 Field Ambulance
  • 4 Military Police Platoon
  • 1er Battalion, Royal 22e Régiment
  • 444 Tactical Helicopter Squadron
  • 5 AMU (Air Movement Unit)

Initially equipped with Centurion tanks and Ferret armored cars, Canadian military capabilities were enhanced with the replacement of the Centurion by the Leopard 1 main battle tank and the employment of the M113 armored personnel carrier.

The Royal Canadian Air Force also committed a detachment No.1 Air Division RCAF at Canadian Forces Base Baden-Soellingen. With the need for greater NATO air defense commitments, No.1 Air Division RCAF was officially established in the 1950s initially at four bases in France and West Germany. These bases respectively were RCAF Station Marville home to No.1 Wing and RCAF Grostenquin home to No.2 Wing positioned in France and RCAF Station Zweibrücken home to No. 3 Wing and RCAF Station Baden-Soellingen home to No.4 Wing located in West Germany. Each wing had three fighter squadrons assigned to them each. Eight air division squadrons were replaced with strike aircraft complete with nuclear capability an issue which would prove quite controversial in Canada.

In 1963, the French government announced that all nuclear weapons positioned on French soil would fall under French control, an announcement that the Canadians and other NATO forces strongly disagreed with. As a result of this, all Canadian nuclear strike forces were relocated to RCAF Station Zweibrücken and  RCAF Station Baden-Soellingen. In 1964, RCAF Station Grostenquin was closed with its assets transferred to RCAF Marville. RCAF Marville would later be subsequently closed when France withdrew from NATO's military command structure and ordered all foreign military forces to vacate French soil or thus fall under French military authority. The units from RCAF Marville were then transfered to RCAF Station Lahr. In 1966, the Canadians took over Base Aérienne 139 Lahr which was operated by the French Armée de l'Air. French forces were vacating the base in compliance with the French withdrawal from NATO. The first RCAF personnel would arrive in March 1967 when it was renamed RCAF Station Lahr.

With the consolidation of Canadian military forces, RCAF Station Lahr was renamed Canadian Forces Base Lahr which was shortened to CFB Lahr. RCAF Station Zweibrücken would also be closed followed Canadian defense reviews in 1969 as part of an effort to remove duplication of force projection and cut the defense budget. Soon only RCAF Station Lahr and RCAF Station Baden-Soellingen remained. Along with the fighter units maintained at CFB Baden-Soellingen, there was a mechanized infantry battalion assigned there as well. Mechanized Infantry Battalions at CFB Baden Soellingen included:

  • 1970-1977: 3rd Mechanized Commando, The Canadian Airborne Regiment
  • 1977-1984: 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment
  • 1984-1988: 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry
  • 1988-1993: 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment

In addition to these units there was a communication squadron as well as an air defense battery and a multi-force airfield repair unit. Under the reorganization of Canadian defense forces, No.1 Air Division RCAF became 1 Canadian Air Group. Following a period of intense renewed Cold War tensions, CFB Baden-Soellingen received improved infrastructure and services as well as upgrades and improvements to the base to accommodate the arrival of new CF-18 Hornet multirole fighters to replace the CF-104 Starfighters.

East German Volksmarine Order of Battle 1989

The Volksmarine of the German Democratic Republic although not as large as its West German naval counterpart or other Navy's was none the less a potent military branch with capabilities to harass NATO shipping and land forces. It maintained no submarines, which were barred from serving in the East German Navy by the Soviet authorities however it did operate several frigates as well as fleets of torpedo and fast attack boats. After the construction of the Berlin Wall on 13 August 1961, the Volksmarine found itself with a two fold mission, with forces dedicated to defending the nations coast and waterways, and forces dedicated to patroling East Germany's waterways to prevent defection into the West. Many of the combat vessels in Volksmarine service were built in East Germany, with other vessels as well as aircraft provided by the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of Poland. Ironically, in 1988 the Volksmarine had a brief hostile confrontation with the naval forces of Poland over a maritime border dispute.

The Structure of the the Volksmarine was established into three Flotillas and a single Coastal Border Brigade as such:

  • 1. Flottille (1st Flotilla) in Peenemünde,
  • 4. Flottille (4th Flotilla) in Rostock-Warnemünde,
  • 6. Flottille (6th Flotilla)  at Bug on Rügen Island
  • 6. Grenzbrigade Küste (6th Border Brigade Coastal) in Rostock

There were also additional units that supported Volksmarine operations ranging from torpedo maintenance companies to engineer battalions, coastal defense batteries and scientific research facilities. There were three separate combat units, two naval aviation squadrons and a specialized unit of commando combat swimmers.

  • Marinehubschraubergeschwader 18 or MHG-18 was a naval helicopter squadron based in Parow near Stralsund. It operated navalized variants of the Mil Mi-4 Hound & Mil Mi-8 Hip as well as the navalized Mil Mi-14 Haze in support of naval and amphibious operations.
  • Marinefliegergeschwader 28 or MFG-28 was the naval air squadron of the East German Volksmarine. Based near Laage, the squadron operated navalized versions of the Sukhoi Su-22 M4 Fitter fighter bomber tasked with close air support and naval reconnaissance operations.
  • Kampfschwimmerkommando 18 or KSK-18 was a specialized unit of navy frogmen positioned in Kühlungsborn. The combat swimmers specialized in underwater demolition and other clandestine operations in a maritime environment.

East German Luftstreitkräfte der NVA Order of Battle 1989

The Air Force of the East German Nationale Volksarmee or  Luftstreitkräfte der NVA as it was officially known posed a formidable threat to NATO forces positioned in Western Europe during the Cold War. Although small, it was one of the most technologically sophisticated air arms of all the Warsaw Pact nations. Being positioned on the border of the ‘Iron Curtain’ the Luftstreitkräfte operated a number of aircraft of equivalent to the Soviet Air Force rather than downgraded export models often flown by other Warsaw Pact air forces. With 35,000 soldiers spread across two air divisions responsible for defending the northern and southern approaches of East Germany, the Luftstreitkräfte was to serve as an initial strike force leading the way for heavier Soviet strike aircraft. The Luftstreitkräfte's units carried on a tradition of Warsaw Pact nations under Soviet control by naming it's units after prominent figures in the Communist struggle.

1st Luftverteidigungsdivision (1st LVD) – Cottibus, East Germany

The 1st LVD was responsible for operations in southern parts of East Germany. With the Air Force and the Air Defense Units consolidated it maintained a vast number of airfields and gun batteries reflective of Soviet Air Defense doctrine. The following list of units is the major subordinate units assigned under the 1st LVD. Each unit was then broken down further into smaller units.

  • Jagdfliegergeschwader 1 (JG-1) „Fritz Schmenkel“ - Holzdorf
  • Jagdfliegergeschwader 3 (JG-3) „Wladimir Komarow“ - Preschen
  • Jagdfliegergeschwader 7 (JG-7) „Wilhelm Pieck“ -  Drewitz
  • Jagdfliegergeschwader 8 (JG-8) „Hermann Matern“ - Marxwalde
  • 41. Fla-Raketenbrigade (41. FRBr) „Hermann Dunker“ - Ladeburg
  • 51. Fla-Raketenbrigade (51. FRBr) „Werner Lamberz“ - Sprötau
  • Fla-Raketenregiment 31 (FRR-31) „Jaroslaw Dombrowski“ - Straßgräbchen
  • Funktechnisches Bataillon 31 (FuTB 31) - Döbern
  • Funktechnisches Bataillon 41 (FuTB-41) „Arvid Harnack“ - Holzdorf
  • Funktechnisches Bataillon 51 (FuTB-51) „Paul Schäfer“ - Sprötau
  • Funktechnisches Bataillon 61 (FuTB-61) - Müncheberg
  • Nachrichtenbataillon 31 (NB-31) „August Willich“ - Cottibus

3rd Luftverteidigungsdivision (3rd LVD) - Trollenhagen, East Germany

The 3rd LVD was responsible for operations in the northern part of East Germany.

  • Musikkorps der LSK/LV -  Trollenhagen
  • Jagdfliegergeschwader 2 (JG-2) „Juri Gagarin“ - Trollenhagen
  • Jagdfliegergeschwader 9 (JG-9) „Heinrich Rau“ - Peenemünde
  • Fliegertechnisches Bataillon 9 (FTB-9) „Käthe Niederkirchner“ - Peenemünde
  • 43. Fla-Raketenbrigade (43. FRBr) „Erich Weinert“ - Sanitz
  • Fla-Raketenregiment 13 (FRR-13) „Etkar André“ - Parchim
  • Fla-Raketenregiment 23 (FRR-23) „Rudolf Breitscheid“ - Stallberg
  • Funktechnisches Bataillon 23 (FuTB-23) „Liselotte Herrmann“ - Pragsdorf
  • Funktechnisches Bataillon 33 (FuTB-33) „Fritz Behn“ - Pudagla
  • Funktechnisches Bataillon 43 (FuTB-43) - Parchim
  • Nachrichtenbataillon 33 (NB-33) „Max Christiansen-Clausen“ - Trollenhagen

The East German Air Force was essentially an extension of the Soviet Air Force’s 16th Air Army and was to be the frontline strike force for offensive operations into the West. With such a critical mission at its heart, this also resulted in less autonomy from the Soviet Union as opposed to the operating leniency granted to other Warsaw Pact nations.

The Luftstreitkräfte operated many of the USSR’s most advanced fighter designs but it’s offensive capacities were relegated to air defense and army support roles. It had no strategic bombers and had no long range capacity. Its weaponry was employed in mostly a purely defensive nature to counteract penetration by Western Air Forces.

In the event that the Cold War would have gone hot, the offensive capacity of the East German Luftstreitkräfte would be transferred under the control of an organization known as the Führungsorgan der Front- und Militärtransportfliegerkräfte which translates into the Command of the Frontal & Military Air Units. Under this unit all fighters, fighter-bombers, reconnaissance, transport and military helicopters would be realigned for offensive operations. This would not only include Luftstreitkräfte units but also Naval Aviation units as well. In the event of war, the structure of the FO FMTFK would look like this:

  • Jagdbombenfliegergeschwader 37 (JBG-37) „Klement Gottwald“ - Drewitz
  • Jagdbombenfliegergeschwader 77 (JBG-77) „Gebhardt Leberecht von Blücher“ - Laage
  • Marinefliegergeschwader 28 (MFG-28) „Paul Wieczorek“ - Laage
  • Transporthubschraubergeschwader 34 (THG-34) „Werner Seelenbinder“ - Brandenburg-Briest
  • Verbindungsfliegerstaffel 14 (VS-14) - Strausberg
  • Transportfliegerstaffel 24 (TFS-24) - Dresden-Klotzsche
  • Taktische Aufklärungsfliegerstaffel 47 (tAFS-47) - Preschen
  • Taktische Aufklärungsfliegerstaffel 87 (tAFS-87) - Drewitz

East German Landstreitkräfte Order of Battle 1989

At the height of the Cold War, the East German Ground Forces maintained a personnel strength of 180,000 soldiers spread across ten combat ready divisions. Eight of those were motorized infantry regiments supported by two armored divisions. There were six primary combat divisions divided into two military districts reflecting their area of operations. Military District North was headquartered in Neubrandenburg, East Germany and was comprised of the following combat divisions:

Military District North – Neubrandenburg, East Germany

  • 1st Motorisierte-Schützen-Division – Potsdam
  • 8th Motorisierte-Schützen-Division – Schwerin
  • 9th Panzerdivision – Eggesin

The Military District South was headquartered in Leipzig and was comprised of the following combat ready divisions:

Military District South – Leipzig, East Germany

  • 4th Motorisierte-Schützen-Division – Erfurt
  • 11th Motorisierte-Schützen-Division – Halle
  • 7th Panzerdivision – Dresden

Each Motorisierte-Schützen-Division, the equivalent of a Mechanized Infantry Division was on average comprised of three motorized infantry regiments, an artillery regiment, armored regiment, two command & control regiments, a rocket artillery regiment, anti-aircraft missile regiment, heavy mortar regiment, reconnaissance regiment, engineer regiment, anti-tank regiment, signals regiment, security regiment, repair regiment, chemical regiment, medical regiment & a regiment of replacements assigned to them.

The difference with a Panzerdivision or Armored Division was its concentration on armor. Where a motorized infantry unit was comprised of three infantry regiments, an armored division maintained three armored regiments with a single regiment of motorized infantry, an artillery regiment, two command & control regiments, an anti-aircraft missile regiment, rocket artillery regiment, heavy mortar regiment, reconnaissance regiment, engineer regiment, signals regiment, security regiment, repair regiment, chemical regiment, medical regiment as well as a regiment of replacements.

The northern military district would have most likely been the East German units that would cross the north German plains and face off against the British Army of the Rhine and NATO’s Northern Army Group (NAG) comprising of forces from West Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the United States positioned across Lower Saxony, western Schleswig-Holstein and North Rhine Westphalia.

The North German Plain is where NATO commanders expected the main thrust of a Warsaw Pact invasion of Western Europe led by the Soviet Army's Third Shock Army, a force the size of four Corps with two independent regiments attached to it remaining positioned in East Germany since the Soviet victory at the end of the Second World War. The composition of the North German Plain proved excellent in theory for the deployment of armored forces and mechanized maneuver warfare.

The southern military district would have been the group facing off against U.S. military personnel in southern Germany poised to press into western Germany through the Fulda Gap or in a rather unlikely move in an armored thrust through the Danube in Austria.

The Fulda Gap was the secondary most likely invasion route but it's significance was not ignored by NATO's commanders. The composition of the Fulda Gap was a far less likely arena for mechanized warfare but it provided the Soviets and the East Germans with a direct route of attack for which to advance directly on the heart of American military forces in West Germany located at Frankfurt am Main. This would have proved a devastating blow for West Germany as Frankfurt am Main, was West Germany's financial center and by seizing this location, Soviet & Warsaw Pact forces could effectively stem the flow of American reinforcements which would arrive through large airfields such as Rhein-Main Airbase.

The Southern military district would have been supported by elements of the Soviet Army's 8th Guards Army of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany and followed by a subordinate Soviet Army Group through the Fulda Gap into the West.

Behind these primary units were four units with a fifth ready for battle as well in the event of full mobilization for war. These were all motorized rifle regiments:

  • 6th Motorisierte-Schützen-Division – Königswartha
  • 10th Motorisierte-Schützen-Division – Ronneburg
  • 17th Motorisierte-Schützen-Division – Petersroda
  • 19th Motorisierte-Schützen-Division – Wulkow
  • 20th Motorisierte-Schützen-Division – Bredenfelde

East German combats units were also supported by specialized units of the Kommando Landstreitkräfte such as the 40th Fallschirmjägerbataillon Willi Sänger, an airborne unit of battalion strength maintaining about 500 elite paratroopers trained in subversion, sabotage and other disruptive tactics. The 40th Fallschirmjägerbataillon Willi Sänger was the only airborne unit of the East German armed forces and was headquartered originally in Prora, Rügen Island and towards the latter stages of the Cold War near Potsdam.

Soviet Army Central Group of Forces Wartime Order of Battle 1989

The Soviet Central Group of Forces were essentially the Soviet Army Group positioned in Czechoslovakia which in the event of war against NATO would cross the border regions with West Germany into Bavaria. As with the Group of Soviet Forces Germany or the Western Group of Forces, the Central Group of Forces maintained a higher troop strength than the Northern Group of Forces for multiple reasons. The first was that the Soviets had initially arrived in Czechoslovakia in 1968 to supress the Prague Spring uprisings and the second was due to the proximity of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic to the Federal Republic of Germany. In the event of war with NATO, the Central Group of Forces would be bolstered by maneuver forces from other Warsaw Pact nations and be on the western flank of the maneuver Armies as they engaged the NATO Central Army Group.

The Central Army Group maintained a troop strength of 85,000 soldiers. The majority of the forces were positioned into Czech territory with a small portion of the troops positioned in the Slovakian side of the country.

Soviet Army Northern Group of Forces Wartime Order of Battle 1989

Compared to the amount of military forces positioned in the territory of the German Democratic Republic, the Soviet military presence in the Peoples Republic of Poland was somewhat minimal. In actuality, the Soviet Army still maintained a significant presence in Poland during the Cold War. When the Soviets initially positioned troops in Poland at the end of the Second World War, they maintained a force of 300,000 to 400,000 soldiers on Polish soil but as demobilization of units took place in the postwar years this presence was gradually reduced to 56,000 soldiers by the time the Army Group left Poland in the mid 1990s.

Soviet Army Western Group of Forces Wartime Order of Battle 1989

The Soviet Western Group of Forces was essentially the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany positioned across the German Democratic Republic. Following the cease of hostilities in the Second World War, the Soviet military positioned a large number of men and materiel inside eastern Germany. When the threat of war with western European countries aligned with NATO became a possibility the Soviets reinforced their existing military strength in the territory of East Germany. The existing number of Soviet forces would be further enhanced by the addition of military forces of the German Democratic Republic and other Warsaw Pact armed forces depending on the theater of operations.

Soviet Western Group of Forces would move to penetrate into West Germany across the Inner German Border and attack across the North German Plain and through the Fulda Gap where they would engage the maneuver forces of NATO's Northern Army Group and Central Army Group.

NATO's Central Army Group Wartime Order of Battle 1989

If the Cold War would have gone hot into a shooting war and the armored forces of the Warsaw Pact would have rolled West in an invasion of the Federal Republic of Germany, NATO would deploy its maneuver formations along the Inner German Border to counter the advancing communist forces. The Northern Army Group consisting of five Corps from four nations would be tasked with defending the eastern flank across the North German Plain. To the immediate south of the Northern Army Group was NATO's Central Army Group. NATO Central Army Group was a manuever formation made up of four Corps from three nations (even though the Corps were under American and West German commands, there were Canadian Army units attached to the American VII Corps). The Corps level assets effectively the II German Corps, III German Corps, US V Corps and US VII Corps would provide forward defense for the southern portion of the Federal Republic of Germany. These forces would be tasked with engaging the forces of the Warsaw Pact along the strategically vital Fulda Gap, and along the border with Czechoslovakia.

After the withdrawal of French forces from NATO in 1966, French forces wishing to continue contributing combat forces for the defense of western Europe made available two additional Corps level units. These units were essentially the French I & II Corps and were available to fight alongside NATO command however they would not be placed under the NATO command structure in the event of war.
